The Language Institute (LI)
The Language Institute is an English immersion program. Students from all over Modesto City Schools attend this program. We represent over thirty countries and sixteen languages. While learning content and staying on track to graduate, students also learn invaluable lessons from each other; mastering reading, writing, listening, and speaking the English language. Students are concurrently enrolled in ELD courses along with other core and elective options.
Allowing immigrants and refugees entering U.S. schools at the secondary level to master English, earn a diploma and be well prepared for college and career.

The Golden Bell Award
The California School Boards Association (CSBA) awarded the Language Institute at Davis High a Golden Bell Award! The Golden Bell Awards promote excellence in education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs and governance practices of school boards in school districts and county offices throughout California.
The Gold Ribbon Award
The California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor public schools while the California Distinguished Schools Program is on hiatus as California continues its transition to new assessment and accountability systems. The Language Institute was honored to receive the Gold Ribbon for the outstanding work done with immigrant and newcomer populations to accelerate their English acquisition, and progress towards post-secondary goals.
At the Language Institute we are committed to providing students with the best possible instruction and learning environment. Our teachers are experienced, professionally trained instructors in teaching English as a second language, and they are dedicated to providing students with excellent classroom instruction. Students who qualify for this program receive a personalized schedule that is designed to meet their specific educational needs.
The Language Institute is an English immersion program into a full comprehensive high school or junior high. The Roosevelt Junior High campus serves 7th and 8th grades, while the Grace M. Davis High School campus serves 9th -12th. Students from all over Modesto City Schools attend this program and transportation is provided if the student lives outside the Roosevelt or Grace Davis attendance areas. We represent over thirty countries and sixteen languages. The Language Institute’s intensive English Language Development program is specifically designed and continually developed to help non-native speakers learn essential English skills. All classes are taught in a friendly and caring atmosphere, by well-qualified instructors, which encourages active participation from each student. A lexile measurement is used to structure student program placement.
Our proven program helps newcomer students quickly improve both written and oral expression for academic, personal or professional situations. Whether you are a student who speaks no English, a student who wants to improve already advanced skills or a student who would like to build confidence in expressing yourself in English; we have a place for you in our program.
High School Level Curriculum
Our curriculum includes modern and up to date language acquisition programs that use research-based, data driven assessments to monitor and accelerate the learning process. Students at the 9-12 level all receive a personal laptop as part of the Digital Davis environment for use in all of their classes. Sample applications that the students use on a daily basis include Rosetta Stone, Scholastic System 44 Next Generation, Scholastic READ 180 Next Generation, Google Apps for Education and more.
